A Journey of Awakening: Reflecting on The Bhagavad Gita

In the world of science and logic, I have found an unexpected companion—an ancient spiritual guide called The Bhagavad Gita, also known as The Song of God. At age 21, my bookshelf was accustomed to quirky romantic novels or non-fiction self-improvement books solely focused on the self much more than any profound philosophical texts. However, as life threw its unfathomable challenges at me in 2023, I felt a yearning for something deeper, something to navigate those seemingly endless tribulations with grace.

Amidst these challenges, I reached for The Bhagavad Gita, seeking a source of wisdom and strength. I didn't anticipate the mental endurance required to navigate its teachings, but as they say, just enough pain can transform one's default settings.

Further, completing The Bhagavad Gita on the final day of 2023 felt like a symbolic spiritual cleanse. It was a leap of faith, a departure from the familiar grounds of my logical mind into the vast expanse of spiritual introspection. The journey began as an experiment, an exploration of the profound teachings of this ancient scripture.

Let us now explore how the teachings of the Gita reshaped my understanding of faith, knowledge, and the turbulence of the mind:

My Relationship with Faith

The Bhagavad Gita served as a compass for navigating my evolving relationship with faith. It challenged me to move beyond the confines of my logical mind and embrace the concept of interconnectedness, highlighting the importance of selfless action and service. The echoes of Mahatma Gandhi's life as an example resonated, emphasizing the transformative power of these principles in the real world. It also reminded me of my prior realization about faith," If I can doubt without evidence, why can't I believe without evidence?".

Knowledge and Wisdom

The Gita shattered the rigidity of my worldview, revealing that true knowledge extends beyond the observable universe. It emphasized that we don't experience the world; we experience our nervous system, prompting a profound shift in perspective.

The Turbulent Mind

Amid life's chaos, the Gita presented the concept of yoga as a means to balance the mind and skillfully engage in action. I realized that my will could be a powerful ally or a formidable adversary to the self. The Gita also urged me to find this balance as it made me question the paralysis of my will and ponder on the profound notion that you do not die when the body dies.

Quotes and Ideas that Resonated

The teachings of The Bhagavad Gita weren't presented as commandments but as choices, placing the destiny of humanity firmly in human hands. I found solace in the idea that actions determine destiny, and knowledge and action are inseparable for the wise. For Arjuna, the active life was essential, a concept known as karma yoga. The Gita taught me that ignorance is dispelled by self-knowledge and that faith is not merely professed but expressed through our habits.

In the fertile soil of my current mind, I learned to sow seeds of positive thoughts, reaping rewards in my body and reality. Lust, anger, and greed were unveiled as adversaries, and the call to learn the art of selfless service echoed in my ears.

In humble reflection, The Bhagavad Gita has been more than a book; it has been a guide, a source of wisdom that transcends time. It challenged my preconceptions, shook the foundations of my beliefs, and invited me to embrace a more profound understanding of life. Its lingering impact lies in the curiosity it has stirred within me. This goes beyond exploring diverse world religions; it extends to unraveling the essence of human belief. The unfolding path of this curiosity holds a sense of intrigue for me, and I invite you to share this introspective journey with me.
